Gerard E. Carrino is a leader in public health with more than 20 years of executive experience in world-class nonprofit organizations and institutions of higher education. A second-career academic on faculty at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Dr. Carrino was selected as Inaugural Dean of the Julia Jones Matthews School of Population & Public Health starting February 1, 2023.
Prior to joining TTUHSC, Dr. Carrino was Department Head of Health Policy & Management at the Texas A&M University School of Public Health, where he oversaw nationally ranked programs in health administration, public health policy and management, and health services research. A champion for experiential and interprofessional learning, Dr. Carrino works both locally and nationally to advance interprofessional education and collaboration among students and practitioners in the health sciences through competency-based models.
Dr. Carrino’s first career was in the nonprofit sector, most recently as Senior Vice President at the March of Dimes Foundation, where he was in charge of strategy, program evaluation, government and foundation grants, and a global network of more than 9,600 scientists, government officials, health providers, and corporate leaders focused on preventing birth defects, preterm birth, and infant mortality. He has also held leadership positions at Columbia University, the Island Peer Review Organization, and the New York Academy of Medicine. He brings expertise in strategy, finance, management, governance, and the nonprofit sector into the workplace and into the classroom. Dr. Carrino has served on numerous national committees concerned with healthy births, the healthcare workforce, and interprofessional education and collaboration; and he has won institutional awards for teaching and leadership.
Dr. Carrino earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Akron in Natural Sciences, his Master of Public Health in Geriatrics & Gerontology from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, and his Doctorate of Philosophy in Sociomedical Sciences/Public Health Economics from Columbia University Graduate School of Arts & Sciences.
Dr. Carrino’s research focuses on interprofessional education, maternal and child health, and the nonprofit form in health care.
