Dr. Lukman Tijani obtained his primary medical degree from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Nigeria graduating as the Valedictorian of his class. Dr. Tijani is a graduate of the Albert Einstein Medical Center Internal Medicine Program in Philadelphia. He subsequently did his Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research both in Philadelphia. Dr. Tijani is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Hematology, Medical Oncology, and Internal Medicine.
Dr. Tijani is an Associate Professor at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Lubbock, Texas, where he serves as the Program Director of the combined Hematology and Medical Oncology fellowship program. He was also the Cancer Liaison Physician for the UMC Cancer Center and University Medical Center in Lubbock for 9 years. He was until recently the chair of the UMC Cancer Committee.
Dr. Tijani’s major clinical research work focuses on developing new diagnostic and treatment options for patients with Lung, Head and Neck, and GU cancers.
Dr. Tijani has been a pillar of strength in the oncology service line. When we lost several oncology attending recently, he stepped up in a mighty way to lead the medical oncology division and filled many roles including being the interim chief of the division and interim medical director. Whenever there is an issue that needs to be addressed in the cancer center, Dr. Tijani was there to help. He worked long hours and was always kind and approachable.
He has been recognized with multiple awards including excellence in teaching award from Albert Einstein Medical center, physician of the month, and Dean Clinical teaching awards among others. He is also a member of the TTUHSC Teaching Institute.
Dr. Lukman Tijani's goal is to continue to provide excellent, compassionate, and state of art care to our patients at the UMC Cancer Center and UMC. He would also continue to train the next generation of Hematologists, Medical Oncologists, physicians, and providers so that UMC and TTUHSC would be the leader in health care, education, and research in West Texas and the State of Texas.
Dr. Lukman is married to Ajoke who is an oncology pharmacist with UMC.
