Sharilyn Almodovar, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Immunology and Molecular Microbiology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas. Dr. Almodovar graduated from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico in Ponce with a bachelor's degree in General Sciences. She then earned a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences at the Ponce School of Medicine in 2006 with a focus on Virology. Dr. Almodovar completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Cardiopulmonary Research at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, supported by an NIH/NHLBI T32 Training Grant. In 2010, she was awarded an NIH/NHLBI Mentored Career Development Award (K01) and was promoted to Assistant Professor in the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine. In 2017, Dr. Almodovar was recruited to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, where she continued developing her research program in viral evolution and pathogenic outcomes in the pulmonary vasculature. Dr. Almodovar was promoted to Associate Professor in 2023. She has received several honors and awards including departmental, teaching and mentoring awards, including the 2020 Unsung Hero Award, 2022 Apple Polisher Award (awarded by the Texas Tech University Mortar Board), 2023 Outstanding Faculty Mentor (awarded by the Texas Tech University Center for Integration of STEM Education & Research) and the TTUHSC SOM Steven Berk Block Teaching Award and the 2024 TTUHSC President's Early Career Investigator Award, and membership with the Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering, Science & Technology Protégé Program (2025 TAMEST).
