Simon Williams was born in Dublin, Ireland, and completed his undergraduate in Ireland, gaining a B.A. degree from Trinity College, Dublin in Genetics in 1983. He then moved to the United States and completed a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, a component of the State University of Buffalo, New York, in 1990. He then moved to the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, Maryland for postdoctoral training in the area of gene regulation and cancer, working under the guidance of Peter Johnson, Ph.D. In 1995, Dr. Williams moved to Lubbock, Texas as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cell Biology & Biochemistry to continue his research into the genetic of human cancer, with a focus in myeloid leukemias. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2001 and served as the Director of Research at the Southwest Cancer Research and Treatment Center until 2005. He participated in the redesign of the medical school curriculum that began in 2002 and currently serves as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, with responsibilities in the areas of curriculum and student affairs.
