Surendra Kumar Varma

Dr. Surendra Varma is a University Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine at Lubbock, Texas. His other titles include Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Resident Affairs, Ted Harman Endowed Chair in Medical Education, Vice-Chair and Associate Residency Program Director of Pediatrics and Professor of Physiology and Professor Health Organization Management at same institution. He received his Residence and Pediatric Endocrine Fellowship at Harvard Medical School, Children's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. For more than 20 years he has been the Director of Endocrine Division. He is a member of the Society for Pediatric Research, Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society, The Endocrine Society, American Academy of Pediatrics, and American Diabetes Association, and Fellow of American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. He has been President of Texas Pediatric Society. He has served twice as President of American Diabetes Association, Texas Affiliate. He is currently the President of the Teaching Academy and a Member of Board of Trustees, Texas Medical Foundation Quality Institute. He is the author of 136 papers and abstracts. He has made 135 scientific presentations to international, national, and regional medical organizations. His research interests are in the areas of Pituitary (including growth hormone), Thyroid and Diabetes Mellitus. He serves or has served on various national committees, which include Residency Review Committee in Pediatrics, CME committee (AAP), Residency Scholarship Committee (AAP), program director, Scientific Program, Endocrine Section (AAP) and Council on Socio-Economics Affairs of Texas Medical Association. He was the President of Lubbock-Crosby-Garza County Medical Society. He is recipient of President's award for excellence in Teaching. He is also the recipient of the Texas Pediatric Society Sidney Kaliski Award of Merit His grant funding has been from Genentech, Eli Lilly, Texas Coordinating Board for higher education and District Rotary Club.
