Pediatric Clerkship
Clerkship
The rotation begins with a three-day orientation and lecture series. Clinical duties begin on Thursday of the first week of the rotation. Approximately half of the rotation is spent on the inpatient service and half in the clinics. The NBME is given on the last Friday of the 6-week rotation.

- Clinical Responsibilities
- Follow patients (at least daily reexams, progress notes, lab work, etc.)
- Interact with other members of the Ward team in patient care
- Complete all patient care responsibilities in a timely fashion
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures appropriate with level of training and as directed by residents or attendings - Work Rounds
- 7:00 AM
- See and examine all assigned patients
- Perform subjective and objective assessments
- Chart notes, orders, etc.
- Under supervision of the residents
- Must be completed in time to attend Morning Report - Attending Rounds (Daily)
- Time as scheduled by the attending
- Includes students and residents
- Attendance mandatory - Chairman's Rounds (Friday afternoons)
- Attendance is mandatory
- Case discussion format - Call Schedule
- Every fourth night
- Priority of responsibilities: Admission history, physical, and orders for new patients; follow in-house patients during the night; see patients in emergency room and newborn nursery with residents - General Responsibilities
- Be on time for all clinical and educational assignments
- Adhere to all policies and procedures of the School of Medicine and Department of Pediatrics
- Notify the Student (Clerkship) Coordinator and appropriate attending and residents of absences - Log Book
- Maintain record of all patients seen
- Should include: Age, sex, diagnoses, and location of encounter (ward, clinic, ER, nursery, etc.)

- 7:00 AM
- All students assigned to Ambulatory Clinic and Nursery Block
- See and examine all assigned patients
- Chart notes, orders, parent education, etc.
- Under supervision of the residents and nursery attending
- Must be completed in time to attend Morning Report - Ambulatory Clinic Responsibilities
- Report to clinic as soon as released by Newborn Attending
- Primarily assigned to an attending in Primary Care Clinic
- See patients, perform H&P's, write notes, etc.
- Report directly to attending - Chairman's Rounds (same as on Inpatient Block)
- Time as scheduled by the attending
- Includes students and residents
- Attendance mandatory - Call Schedule (same as on Inpatient Block)

- Common problems and/or topics relevant to general pediatrics - Attending Rounds (Daily)

- 8:15 AM (unless otherwise specified)

- Each student will be expected to present one case during the rotation - Conferences
- Exempt from Tuesday afternoon resident conferences
- Attendance at all departmental conferences is mandatory, unless otherwise instructed
- Grand Rounds is on Fridays at noon - Submit one (1) Admission Note for formal evaluation (see below) and two (2) observed Histories and Physicals
- CLIPP cases
- Web-based teaching cases developed by COMSEP (Committee on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics) to complement the GPCC (General Pediatric Clerkship Curriculum)
- The goal is to complete all 31 cases during the 6-week clerkship, either with faculty, as a group project, or as independent study
- To access the cases, go online to www.clippcases.org; click on "Go To Cases", then "Registration," and follow instructions. In order to register, you must use your TTUHSC email address (name@ttuhsc.edu)

40% - Clinical Evaluations
10% - Admission Notes/Observed H&P
15% - Review Examinations
35% - NBME - Clinical Evaluations
- Students are evaluated by faculty and residents
- Standard Texas Tech School of Medicine forms are used
- At the end of rotation the Clerkship Director and Chairman will review the evaluations and summarize each student's evaluation - Admission Notes / Observed H&P
- Should follow the recommended outline/format, be hand-written in dark ink and legible (typed notes will not be accepted except by prior arrangement with the Clerkship Director)
- Each student should submit one written H&P from the Inpatient service. Additionally, students will be observed performing two H&P's, evaluated by the senior resident or attending physician
- Should be an exact photocopy of the admission note on the patient's chart
- Does not replace review of charts by attending physicians and/or residents - Review Examinations (Quizzes)
- Two per rotation (weeks 3 and 5)
- Covers information from readings, lectures, and self-learning materials - NBME
- Administered the last Friday of the rotation
