Family Medicine Residency Permian Basin

Program Overview

Only one application (to any of the program's 8 sites) is needed in ERAS. You do not need to apply to all sites for your application to be reviewed by the residency recruitment committee. 

We are a university-administered, community-based residency program offering 69 ACGME approved residency positions. Our faculty consists of 15 physicians, a clinical psychologist, and a podiatrist, each with diverse backgrounds and teaching interests. With the support of over 30 enthusiastic community physicians, our residents learn from a broad array of specialties including orthopedics, ophthalmology, neurology, radiology, and wound care, just to name a few. In addition, residents also receive excellent hands on experience while performing emergency and critical care at our participating hospitals, Medical Center Hospital and Midland Memorial Hospital. 

We are also very proud to be one of 34 residency programs in the U.S. to offer a 1:2 or 1:2 like Rural Training Track. The six residents selected for our rural track train in the rural Texas and New Mexico communities located in Alpine, Artesia, Fort Stockton, Hobbs, Pecos and Sweetwater. These residents will attend the first year of residency with their assigned core program and subsequent two years in rural practices outside of Odessa/Midland.

Each year, new residents are greeted into the department with a welcoming event to give all residents, faculty and staff the opportunity to connect. Later in the year, our first year residents, along with the chief residents and faculty participate in a retreat to encourage team-building and camaraderie.

When our residents are not at work, they take advantage of all the activities the Permian Basin has to offer. If your interest lies in sports, we are home to the Midland Rockhounds minor league baseball team, Odessa Jackalopes semi-pro hockey team, West Texas Warbirds arena football team, Sandhills Rodeo, West Texas Relays, and of course Friday Night Lights high school and college football. If arts and culture are what interest you check out the Odessa Arts and Midland Arts Association. If you are more of a shopper, Odessa/Midland has over 225 stores and multiple  shopping centers with a wide range of department stores and restaurants. Working in a predominantly undeserved area, we encourage our residents to plant their roots in The Permian Basin. A great number of our graduates have opened their own practices in the Permian Basin. Others have continued their education through our EM Fellowship. Some have even become teaching faculty with Texas Tech. The Department of Family Medicine only accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service ( ERAS). Information about the service may be obtained from your Dean's Office or from the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC). International medical graduates may obtain information about ERAS through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). All applicants must be eligible for licensure in the state of Texas. Licensure requirements may be found by visiting the Texas Medical Board. International medical graduates must have a current certification through ECFMG.

Applicants should submit their ERAS application, medical school transcripts, Full USMLE/COMPLEX Transcripts,  Dean's letter, three letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. Curriculum vitae and letters of recommendation should fully account for the time since medical school graduation. 
Listed below are the prerequisites for our Family Medicine Program:
Prerequisites (We accept applications through ERAS only). 

All Candidates must:
• Be eligible for a Physician-in-training permit to practice medicine (check Texas Medical Board for requirements).  New Mexico rural residents must be eligible for licensure through the New Mexico Medical Board.
• Be a graduate from an LCME accredited medical school or hold a valid ECFMG certificate.
• Completed USMLE/COMPLEX steps 1 and 2 . 
• USMLE/Complex exams must have a passing score within 3 attempts each step and all exams (including step 3) must be completed within 7 years.
• Graduation date within 5 years is preferred, but not limited to.
• We do not offer observerships.

Resident Selection Process

The Department of Family Medicine has established a resident recruitment committee, which consists of the Family Medicine Residency Program Director, Associate Program Director, Faculty, and Program Coordinators to assist with the initial screening of resident applicants for interview through the ERAS.

Interview Process

 We offer both in-person and virtual interview options through Thalamus.

Our program offers 23 total positions: 17 Core Family Medicine positions (13 in Odessa and 4 in Midland) and 6 Rural Track positions.

All candidates will first complete a Core Program interview, which includes consideration for both our Odessa and Midland Core programs. During the interview day, candidates will have the opportunity to tour the Family Medicine Clinic, Medical Center Hospital, and Midland Memorial Hospital. Candidates will also meet with a variety of residents, faculty, and program administrators to learn more about our program and the resident experience.

Each faculty and resident member who participates in the interview process will complete a standardized evaluation, which is submitted to the Resident Recruitment Committee for review.

Candidates who express interest in the Rural Track will be invited to participate in a separate Rural Track interview following completion of the Core Program interview process. Rural Track interviews are conducted in person at the respective rural training sites, allowing candidates to meet the local faculty and residents and learn more about the unique opportunities available at each site.
