Rotations

The overall goal of the Hematology-Oncology Fellowship is to provide broad training in the disciplines of Hematology and Medical Oncology, focusing on the general competencies put forth by the American Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Inpatient Hematology Oncology Service
The Inpatient Hematology/Oncology service provides an opportunity for fellows to participate in the diagnosis and management of complications of cancer and cancer therapy in an inpatient setting.

Hematology Oncology Consult Service
The Hematology Oncology Consult rotation is designed to allow the fellow to become proficient and independent in the provision of the inpatient consultation services. Fellows will establish hematologic and oncologic diagnoses and recommend and/or initiate treatment plans through communication with the consulting services, and they will coordinate follow-up care by an outpatient team.

Hematology Oncology Subspecialty Clinic Service
The hematology Oncology Subspecialty Clinic Service allows fellows to learn to establish a diagnosis and initiate a treatment plan.  They will follow the sub-specialist in clinics, conferences and tumor boards. They will be required to evaluate and manage 30% or more of the sub-specialist’s patient load, either directly or indirectly.

Palliative Care Service
The Palliative Care Service allows the fellow to further the understanding of Palliative Medicine, to teach specific skills in the care of the dying in Inpatient and Outpatient settings and to develop agents of change in the care of the dying.

Transfusion Medicine/Blood Banking
The transfusion medicine/blood banking rotation teaches the fellows the clinical and laboratory aspects and its impact on hematology/oncology.

Hematopathology Rotation
The hematopathology rotation teaches the fellows all aspects of laboratory medicine as it impacts hematology/oncology.

Research
To provide research training for fellowship trainees in the Hematology/Oncology fellowship program with the goal that the trainee would obtain the basic tools for conducting research and critically reading the ever-changing medical literature that provides the basis for clinical practice.

Radiation Oncology Rotation
Radiation Oncology rotation allows fellows to achieve competence in the treatment of cancer patients with radiation.

Joe Arrington Cancer Center Rotation
On the Joe Arrington Cancer Center Rotation fellows will concentrate on the evaluation and management of patients with benign and malignant hematology disorders. The fellow will be able to provide a varied and comprehensive experience in general and consultative hematology, a sophisticated and comprehensive experience in the diagnosis and management of hematologic malignancies and be able to experience in the diagnosis and management of oncologic emergencies.

Monday

Board Review Strategies
Emphasis is on board testing techniques and review of multiple choice questions.

Hematology Oncology Didactic Lectures
Consists of formal lectures providing a comprehensive review of all aspects of medical oncology and hematology. The disease-specific reviews include the relevant basic biology, pathogenies, epidemiology staging, treatment etc. 

House Staff Meeting
Is a monthly meeting of all TTUHSC fellows sponsored by the office of GME. This meeting serves to update house staff on important institutional issues. Elected officers of the house staff serve as liaisons on many institutional committees.

Tuesday

Breast Tumor Board
This is a multidisciplinary meeting attended by Surgeons, Radiation Oncologists, Medical Oncologists, Pathologists and Radiologists where all new breast cancer cases are discussed. This has been a rewarding conference for fellows.

Case Review Conference
In this conference fellows present challenging cases to the team in an informal manner. 

Morbidity and Mortality
Case-based medical conference where patients with adverse outcomes are critically examined and discussed.

Wednesday

Journal Club
Monthly presentation at which important articles relevant to Hematology/Oncology are critically reviewed and presented by the fellows with input and mentoring from the appropriate faculty members.

Hematopathology Conference
A twice monthly conference where benign and malignant hematology cases are discussed with active participation of the hematopathologists. Bone marrow aspirates, biopsies and peripheral blood smears are reviewed.

Basic Science/Research
A twice monthly conference in which relevant basic science is applied to Hematology and Oncology are discussed by Fellows and Attending's. Ongoing researches are also presented and discussed.

Thursday

Grand Rounds
Are conducted by the Department of Medicine and other institutional faculty as well as visiting professors. Topics include advances in clinical knowledge in many fields on Internal Medicine.

Breast Conference
This weekly internal conference consists of clinical and surgical interest related to the practice of breast care and includes hospital-based case discussions. Participation from surgery, pathology, radiology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, plastic surgery, medical genetics and general internal medicine - breast clinic, is solicited in the discussion of interpretation of findings, differential diagnosis and management of breast diseases.

Neuro Oncology Tumor Board
Held once a month, new neuro oncology cases are presented at a well-attended interdisciplinary meeting. Neurologists, Surgeons, Radiation Oncologists, Medical Oncologists regularly attend this meeting.

Friday

Tumor Board
Interdisciplinary meeting to present new patients, review pathology and radiographic studies, and discuss evidenced-based management.

Bone Marrow Transplant
In this conference Transplant Candidates and current patients are presented and discussed.  A short didactics lecture concerning all aspects of bone marrow transplants is also given twice a month.

University Medical Center (UMC)

University Medical Center (UMC) is a 500-bed hospital. It is a public, non- profit facility that serves as the primary teaching hospital for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. UMC also includes a children's hospital
with Level IV NICU, a family-centered birth center, a regional burn center, and the region's only Level 1 Trauma Center. Wile at UMC, TTUHSC Family Medicine residents take care of hospitalized adults & children, work in the
critical care units, and provide family-centered maternity care in labor & delivery.

UMC Cancer Center

Southwest Cancer Research and Treatment Center offers an exceptional environment for Hematology and Medical Oncology fellows, providing invaluable hands-on experience in a premier cancer facility. Fellows are afforded the unique opportunity to conduct comprehensive initial evaluations for these patients and to ensure ongoing care continuity post-diagnosis.

In this dynamic setting, fellows actively participate in crucial decisions regarding surgical interventions, chemotherapy protocols, and radiation therapy regiments. Additionally, they are empowered to perform essential procedures as needed, such as bronchoscopies and thoracenteses, further enhancing their clinical skill set and contributing to the holistic care of patients.

Joe Arrington Cancer Center

JACC and Covenant Hospital provides Hematology and Oncology fellows a satellite teaching site.  This site includes outpatient and inpatient, including critical care units, stem cell transplant unit and general internal medicine floor services.  It also provides non internal medicine inpatient services with frequent consultation to Hematology and Oncology services for management advice. The Hematology/Oncology fellows will have the opportunity to increase their medical knowledge, enhance their clinical skills, increase their clinical experience and enhance their clinical judgment while rotating at JACC/Covenant Hospital. In addition, they will have the opportunity to work in a private health care system with experienced attending physicians.

UT Southwestern Medical Center

UT Southwestern Medical Center provides Hematology Oncology fellows with a satellite teaching site. This site includes a stem cell transplant unit, outpatient, inpatient and general internal medicine floor service. The educational objective is to provide a sophisticated and comprehensive exposure to the principles and practice of high close therapies and autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, including the infectious disease complications as well as graft-versus-host disease. Goals and Objectives specific to ACGME competencies are attached.

Fellows will take good care of patients allocated to them. Fellows will also be responsible for diagnostic and the therapeutic procedures including bone marrow biopsies and intrathecal chemotherapy administration via lumbar puncture and/or Ommaya reservoir tap.
