Family Medicine Rural Residency Track Permian Basin

Program Overview

Only one application (to any of the program's 8 sites) is needed in ERAS. You do not need to apply to all sites for your application to be reviewed by the residency recruitment committee.

The design of our Rural Track recognizes the importance of continuity as a foundational principle of Family Medicine. This is reinforced through longitudinal clinical experiences that allow residents to work one-on-one with family physicians who provide comprehensive, continuous care across the full spectrum of family medicine. Residents gain experience caring for patients throughout their lifespan, from prenatal and postpartum care, newborns and adolescents to adults and geriatric patients, as well as through the pre-operative and post-operative continuum of care.

Residents matched to each rural site participate in longitudinal clinical and educational experiences tailored to the resources and patient populations available at that location. This model allows residents to develop meaningful relationships with their supervising physicians, patients, and local healthcare teams while gaining a broad understanding of rural healthcare delivery.

Residents will continue to participate in yearly inpatient experiences and share educational and program activities at the core Family Medicine program. These experiences provide opportunities to learn alongside their co-residents while maintaining the strong connection between the rural track and the core residency program.

Admissions Requirements

Applicants should submit their ERAS application, medical school transcripts, Full USMLE/COMPLEX Transcripts, Dean's letter, three letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. Curriculum vitae and letters of recommendation should fully account for the time since medical school graduation. 
Listed below are the prerequisites for our Family Medicine Program:
Prerequisites (We accept applications through ERAS only). 

All Candidates must:
• Be eligible for a Physician-in-training permit to practice medicine (check Texas Medical Board for requirements).  New Mexico rural residents must be eligible for licensure through the New Mexico Medical Board.
• Be a graduate from an LCME accredited medical school or hold a valid ECFMG certificate.
• Completed USMLE/COMPLEX steps 1 and 2 . 
• USMLE/Complex exams must have a passing score within 3 attempts each step and all exams (including step 3) must be completed within 7 years.
• Graduation date within 5 years is preferred, but not limited to.
• We do not offer observerships.

Resident Selection Process 

The Department of Family Medicine has established a resident recruitment committee, which consists of the Family Medicine Residency Program Director, Associate Program Director, Faculty, and Program Coordinators to assist with the initial screening of resident applicants for interview through the ERAS.    

Interview Process

 All selected candidates will first complete an interview with our Core Family Medicine Residency Program for Midland/Odessa. Candidates may choose between in-person or virtual interview options, which will be coordinated through Thalamus.

Applicants who express interest in Rural Track during the core program interview process could be invited to participate in a second, site-specific Rural Track interview. Rural Track interviews are conducted in person only and are typically held from late January through early February.

We offer six Rural Track positions across our participating rural sites.

As part of the core interview day, candidates will have the opportunity to tour our clinical facilities, including the Family Medicine Clinic, Medical Center Hospital, and Midland Memorial Hospital. Candidates will also meet with current residents, faculty, and program administrators to learn more about the program, clinical experiences, and opportunities available through the core program. You will also receive detailed information about rural track interviews.
