Nephrology PGY4 and PGY5

For Nephrology applicants, we offer a two-year ACGME accredited fellowship designed to provide outstanding clinical training in a diverse and supportive learning environment. You will have a balance between inpatient and outpatient duties exposing you to the breadth of Nephrology. For Nephrology/Critical Care applicants, we offer a three-year ACGME accredited fellowship. Your first two years will be focused on Nephrology under the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension while your last year will be focused on Critical Care under the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care.

We have two inpatient consult services that you will rotate through: AKI and ESKD/Transplant. Our ESKD service will also manage any kidney transplant patients that are admitted to the hospital. The inpatient Nephrology service does not admit patients; we are solely a consult service.

Our outpatient experience is quite extensive with participation in various clinics (e.g., Fellow's Clinic, Pre-Transplant Clinic, Post-Transplant Clinic, Onconephrology Clinic, CKD5 Clinic, and Faculty Clinic). You will also be involved with outpatient dialysis management through Comprehensive In-Center Hemodialysis Rounds, Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement Medical Director Meetings, and Home Dialysis Clinics.

To provide a full and enriching transplant experience, all second year fellows will be sent to the University of Texas Southwestern for one month to gain an additional experience in inpatient and outpatient transplant.

Nephrology/Critical Care Applicants

Didactics will be broadly broken down into two categories: medical knowledge and career development.

Medical Knowledge: This series will provide foundational concepts to prepare you for the Boards and clinical practice as a competent nephrologist. Each month will be broken into specific learning competencies identified by the ABIM Nephrology Blueprint to provide a focused and deliberate education. For example, one month will be focused on Chronic Kidney Disease topics while the next month will cover Glomerulonephritis topics. We will deliver this series through a variety of lectures:

• Nephrology Grand Rounds
• Book Club
• M&M Conferences
• Research Presentations

Career Development: This series will focus on the business of nephrology. Our goal at Texas Tech is to provide you with a holistic education, which includes the foundational knowledge to navigate your career successfully and achieve your professional goals.

• Faculty Development Academic Series: Through a partnership with the Office of Faculty Development, we will explore topics to become a successful academic nephrologist.
• Private Practice Series: Through a partnership with Fresenius, we will explore concepts like market analysis, medical directorship, and investment opportunities as a nephrologist.
• Miscellaneous: We will invite other experts in their fields to discuss general financial literacy, billing, and insurance topics.

Additionally, we will support second year fellows attendance at ASN Conference to further develop their exposure to the growing field of Nephrology.

Salaries

University Medical Center (UMC)

University Medical Center (UMC) is a 500-bed hospital. It is a public, non- profit facility that serves as the primary teaching hospital for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. UMC also includes a children's hospital with Level IV NICU, a family-centered birth center, a regional burn center, and the region's only Level 1 Trauma Center. Wile at UMC, TTUHSC Family Medicine residents take care of hospitalized adults & children, work in the critical care units, and provide family-centered maternity care in labor & delivery.

University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

We have partnered with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, to send our second-year Nephrology Fellows on a four-week away rotation to experience the full spectrum of kidney transplant. Fellows will gain valuable insight into the peri-operative kidney transplant period, complications of kidney transplant management, and exposure to kidney complications of other organ transplantations.

Quality Improvement & Research Opportunities

All fellows will be required to participate and expected to complete a Quality Improvement Project during their Nephrology training.

Additional research endeavors (e.g., retrospective studies, case reports, Journal Review articles, etc.) are highly encouraged at TTUHSC to develop your clinical expertise and CV. If a fellow is interested with bench research, there are additional opportunities to get involved with Dr. Prabhakar's lab or other labs pending your specific interests. We will help build a customized experience for you!

Welcome to the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Nephrology Fellowship Program.

Our goal is to train outstanding nephrologists who provide compassionate, evidence-based care while developing the skills needed to become independent clinicians, educators, and leaders in kidney health.

Our fellows care for a diverse patient population across West Texas and Eastern New Mexico and gain extensive experience in all aspects of nephrology, including chronic kidney disease, dialysis, hypertension, glomerular diseases, kidney transplantation, and acute kidney injury. Through close mentorship and hands-on clinical training, fellows graduate prepared for careers in private practice, academic medicine, and leadership positions within nephrology.
