Program Overview

Residents at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Permian Basin train across two hospitals, Medical Center Hospital in Odessa and Midland Memorial Hospital, developing full-spectrum expertise in obstetrics and gynecology while caring for the women and families of West Texas. As a regional referral center serving patients who travel from as far as several hours away, our program offers exceptional depth and a variety of clinical experiences. Each year, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center OB/GYN–Permian Basin delivers more than 3,500 babies, records over 29,000 clinic visits, and performs more than 700 major gynecologic surgeries — hands-on experience from the very first rotation.

Goals & Educational Structure

At Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Permian Basin OB/GYN, our aim is for every resident to develop the knowledge, surgical skill, and professionalism to enjoy a productive career in women’s health and to achieve certification by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Training is structured around the six core competencies defined by the ABMS and the ACGME — patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice.

Alongside progressive, hands-on clinical responsibility, residents follow a structured didactic curriculum that is planned before each academic year and designed to integrate the art and science of obstetrics and gynecology across every core area of the specialty. Educational activities include:

  • Protected didactic sessions held on a regular weekly schedule
  • Grand rounds and morbidity & mortality improvement conferences
  • Journal club, book club, and evidence-based practice review
  • Simulation-based surgical and obstetric skills training
  • Preparation for the annual CREOG In-Training Examination and EMIGS
  • Scholarly activity and resident-led research in women’s health

Together, these experiences ensure that every graduate leaves confident, well-rounded, and fully prepared to practice comprehensive women’s health care.

  • Thank you for your interest in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in the Permian Basin. Where you train shapes the physician you become and the patients you are prepared to serve. I invite you to consider joining us in West Texas, where your training is measured both by the depth of your clinical experience and by the real difference you make in women’s lives.

The Permian Basin, anchored by the neighboring cities of Odessa and Midland, is home to a growing, diverse population that has long been underserved in women’s health. Many of our patients travel hours for care, and for a great number of them we are the first, and sometimes the only, OB/GYN care they will ever receive. Our residents walk alongside these women at every stage of life. This is medicine where you are genuinely needed and where the care you provide changes outcomes.

Our residents train primarily at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa and Midland Memorial Hospital, gaining full-spectrum, hands-on experience, including high-risk obstetrics, complex gynecologic and minimally invasive surgery, and care for critically ill patients. As a regional referral center, our patients present with real complexity; residents build confidence and independence early and graduate ready to practice comprehensive women’s health care anywhere they choose.

Our program is close-knit with faculty who know every resident by name and are deeply invested in teaching, mentorship, and your success. We take your well-being seriously and work hard to build a supportive, collegial culture, and many of our graduates choose to stay and serve the region that trained them.

If you are looking for a residency where you will be challenged, exceptionally well trained, and given the privilege of making a lasting difference for an underserved population, I warmly encourage you to explore and apply to our program. The need in West Texas is real, and we would be honored to have you help meet it. I look forward to meeting you.

    With warm regards,
