Orthopedics Residency Lubbock

The program’s mission is to provide competent orthopedic surgeons for the under-served rural areas of our region. This includes recruitment of residents with connections to the region, provision of tertiary care to support existing surgeons in the region, and promote a broad training program for graduates to be confident in their skills to work independently in this environment. The program is integral to the University Medical Center, in providing tertiary orthopedic care to the region and the program's graduates working within the sponsoring institution’s network and referral region.

Our program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). It is a 5-year program consisting of 4.5 years training in Orthopaedic Surgery and a 6 month rotating internship. Residents train at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center and Covenant Children’s Hospital in Lubbock, Texas. We currently accept 4 candidates per year, and will participate in Universal Offer Day on November 18th. Further information on our program can be found on the FREIDA website. Program Overview

Curriculum & Coursework

Required resident rotations are dictated by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. The intern year includes general surgery, SICU, rehabilitation & emergency room medicine, as well and orthopaedics. PGY-2 & PGY-3 are junior residents with responsibility to provide 1st call, initial patient care for trauma patients entering the the ER and making initial evaluations. PGY-4 & PGY-5 are chief residents. Their supervisory responsibility increases and they help supervise and direct the activities of junior residents and interns. The following is a sample of rotations per PGY level.

Research/Skills labs are integrated into weekly schedule.

Admissions Requirements

Applications are accepted from September 1 - October 31 and only through the Electronic Residency Application Service ERAS. Only completed applications will be reviewed. The program is participating in the ERAS supplemental application program and will give preference to applicants who signal their interest in the program. (We no longer require a statement of interest)

The program participates in Universal Offer Date and applicants will have 7 days to accept interview offers.

Interviews

Virtual interviews will be held in January using Zoom.

TTUHSC accepts FMGs from accredited medical schools possessing a J-1 visa only, after passing their ECFMG. If you have graduated from a foreign medical school, please contact the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates ECFMG. The following are application requirements to be included in your file for review.

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center utilizes the AAMC Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VLSO, previously known as VSAS) to receive visiting MD and DO student applications. For more information regarding VSLO, please visit the VSLO website or contact 202.478.9878.

To apply for a TTUHSC visiting rotation, please complete and send us a VSLO application for your preferred dates. We will begin reviewing applications for applicants with 1 honors or a Step 2 score of AT LEAST 230 in April, and will be following AOA CORD guidelines.
