Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency Lubbock

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program will equip residents with the expertise, compassion, and dedication to deliver exceptional, comprehensive, and holistic medical care. We offer a broad spectrum of training to residents in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of functional impairment across a diverse variety of inpatient and outpatient educational settings. With integrity, empathy, and innovation, our physiatrists are trained to be outstanding physicians, teachers, leaders, and role models who improve lives, advance knowledge, and shape the future of physiatry.

Program Overview

Vision
The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program is dedicated to empowering and developing physiatrists with a robust, full-scope toolkit of skills, knowledge, and passion to excel in both academic and community settings. We are committed to providing comprehensive care to rural and underserved communities, equipping our physicians to make a meaningful impact locally and nationally.

Curriculum & Coursework

  • The goal of formal didactics is to provide in-depth education on rehabilitation medicine in clinically and board-relevant content.

    Topics include:

    • General PM&R
    • Musculoskeletal rehabilitation
    • Pediatric rehabilitation
    • Electrodiagnostic medicine
    • Spinal cord injury
    • Neurorehabilitation
    • Sports medicine
    • Pain medicine
    • Orthotics/Prosthetics
    • Wound care

    Didactics are scheduled every Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and are overseen by faculty members.

  • PGY 1: Broad-based clinical year across FM, IM, Neuro, Ortho, Peds, Surgery

    PGY 2: 5 months Inpatient PM&R, 2 months EMG, additional blocks in Therapy, Pedi PM&R, Brain Injury, Outpatient PM&R and Wound

    PGY 3: 3 months Inpatient PM&R, 2 months Outpatient PM&R, additional blocks in Pedi PM&R, Brain Injury, EMG, Prosthetics/Orthotics, Veterans, and Elective

    PGY 4: 5 months electives, 2 months Inpatient PM&R, 2 months consults, additional blocks in Pedi PM&R, EMG, and Outpatient PM&R

Applying for Residency

Applications will be accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

Requirements:

  • Three references – one of which specializes in PM&R
  • Dean’s Letter
  • Medical School Transcripts
  • Official USMLE or COMLEX scores 
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Personal Statement
  • Completion of an elective in PM&R

We begin reviewing files in October and applicants we are most interested in will be invited for a virtual interview. At this time, we plan to conduct virtual interviews in December.

Vacation
Vacation is approved for not more than 15 working days for PGY 1 and 2 and not more than 20 working days for PGY-3 and above. Leave policies vary by program and may not apply to all programs. Program-specific leave details, including the number of days available, may be listed below.*

  • Sick leave for up to 12 working days per year. Leave policies vary by program and may not apply to all programs. Program-specific leave details, including the number of days available, may be listed below.*
  • Family and parental leaves of absence (see also US Department of Labor Employment Standards Administrative - FMLA)

  • Military leave not to exceed 15 work days per year.

Retirement & Savings
Residents and fellows are not eligible for TTU System's 401K plan but can participate in the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) the Tax-Deferred Account Program (TDA). More information will be provided upon starting your program.
