General Track

PGY-1 Year

Inpatient Psychiatric
Duration: 5 months
Location: Sunrise Canyon Hospital
Experience: This rotation lasts for five months, interspersed throughout the academic year. The workday lasts from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
 
Consult-Liaison Psychiatry Service
Duration: 2 months
Location: University Medical Center
Experience: This rotation spans over two blocks through the academic year. The PGY1 residents see patients on the hospital medical floor, where the various hospital services have psychiatric questions. In addition, the PGY-1 resident will be working hand-in-hand with a PGY-2 resident.
 
Primary Care Experience
Duration: 5 blocks

Location: University Medical Center, Texas Tech Physicians
Experience: Residents typically have 5 blocks of “off service” rotations in their PGY1 year which include two blocks of internal medicine, one block of family medicine, one block of pediatrics and one block of emergency medicine. Residents, while on these off-service rotations, are a part of the respective specialty’s clinical teams responsible for various services at different times including inpatient and outpatient services.
 
Neurology
Duration: 2 blocks
Location: University Medical Center, Texas Tech Physicians
Experience: This two-month rotation occurs interspersed throughout the academic year, where psychiatry residents evaluate patients with various neurological disorders on the neurology consult hospital floor team. Days typically last from 7:30 AM until 5:00 PM. The neurology consult service does not usually require residents from the psychiatry service to see or evaluate patients on the weekends.

PGY-2 Year

Emergency Psychiatry
Duration: 2 blocks
Location:
Experience: This two-block rotation is interspersed throughout the academic year, with residents being on home call from approximately 7:00 PM until 7:00 AM, daily from Sunday until Thursday night. In addition, the PGY-2 resident participates in Emergency Room consultations for psychiatric emergencies and providing treatment recommendations and disposition recommendations to either the medical floor, the psychiatric inpatient unit, or if necessary, discharge with close follow-up.
 
Inpatient Psychiatry Unit

Experience: The PGY-2 resident assists and supervises the PGY-1 residents in seeing and evaluating patients in the psychiatric inpatient unit and helping orient the PGY-1 residents to policies and patient procedures.
 
Consult-Liaison Psychiatry Service

Experience: This two-block rotation is interspersed throughout the academic year. The PGY-2 residents see and evaluate patients on the medical hospital's floor for various psychiatric disorders. The PGY-2 resident also assists the PGY-1 resident during their consult-liaison service.
 
Geriatric Psychiatry

Child-Adolescent Psychiatry Service

Experience: This is a two-month rotation that occurs interspersed throughout the academic year, where second year residents rotate with a day treatment service providing intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization where they get the opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary team providing care for patients. Additionally they have opportunities to evaluate child and adolescent patients either via telemedicine and work with young adults in clinic on an outpatient basis.

Addiction Psychiatry
Duration: 2 half-blocks
Location:
Experience: This is a rotation which is divided into two half-blocks. Residents provide care in a variety of different outpatient settings including rehabilitation facility where they will observe and assist in patient care. These services include dual diagnosis clinics and medication assisted treatment programs.

Forensic Psychiatry
Duration: 2 half-blocks

Experience: PGY2 psychiatry residents will also have approximately two half-blocks of forensic psychiatry during the year. They will engage in the justice system for education and evaluation of patients at the inpatient facility at Montford.

Research

Therapy

Experience: This is a longitudinal rotation where PGY-2 residents will see a therapy patient weekly for approximately one hour except during the night service months. The PGY-2 residents will also attend a group supervision session with the supervising psychologist, who will help facilitate the training in psychotherapy.

PGY-3 Year

Outpatient Longitudinal Clinic
Duration: 13 blocks

Experience: Third-year psychiatry residents will provide longitudinal psychiatry care on an outpatient basis. This rotation generally occurs at the TTUHSC psychiatry clinic campus.
Third-year psychiatry residents will also see 1-3 therapy patients on various days throughout the year.

For one-half day per week, third-year residents will see geriatric patients, child and adolescent psychiatry patients, peripartum psychiatry patients and addiction psychiatry patients with the rest of the time being dedicated to general psychiatry services. This will provide longitudinal exposure to a variety of patients throughout the academic year.

PGY-4 Year

Junior Attending Experience in CL:
Duration: 2 blocks
Location: Covenant Medical Center
Experience: Final year residents get opportunities to lead the consultation liaison service at Covenant Medical Center as a junior attending under the guidance and supervision of experienced faculty. Residents get to lead and supervise advanced practice providers. They are expected to set expectations with and provide guidance to these advanced practice providers as a part of this experience.

Junior Attending Experience in CL:

Days typically last from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM. The Pedi neurology consult service does not usually require residents from the psychiatry service to see or evaluate patients on the weekends.

PGY-2 Year

PGY-5 Year

Outpatient Longitudinal Clinic

Experience: Fifth-year psychiatry residents will provide longitudinal psychiatry care on an outpatient basis. This rotation generally occurs at the General Outpatient clinic.
Fifth-year psychiatry residents will also see 1-3 therapy patients on various days throughout the year.

For one-half day per week, fifth-year residents will see geriatric patients, child and adolescent psychiatry patients, peripartum psychiatry patients and addiction psychiatry patients with the rest of the time being dedicated to Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. This will provide longitudinal exposure to a variety of patients throughout the academic year.

The Department of Psychiatry has a wide range of research interests and resources. We have faculty recipients of Federal, State and Institutional research grants, supported by staff, with years of clinical research experience. We also have active editors and editorial board members for relevant mental health and substance use journals.
 
The department is part of several collaborative research groups including: Texas Youth Depression and Suicide Research Network, Childhood Trauma Research Network, Texas Tech Mental Health Initiative, Center of Excellence for Translational Neuroscience and Therapeutics, Center of Excellence for Integrative Health, and Obesity Research Institute. Our research units include adult out-patient clinics, a child and adolescent psychiatry clinic, in-patient units in affiliated hospitals (e.g. University Medical Center, Covenant Health System) as well as community outreach programs (e.g. Child Psychiatry Access Network and Texas Child Health Access Through Telemedicine program).
 
The Department houses a research-grade repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulator and the residents in our Department have access to a variety of research facilities located on campus including the Texas Tech Neuroimaging Institute, Clinical Research Institute, Garrison Institute on Ageing and Burkhart Center for Autism Education and Research.
 
We foster opportunities for residents and students to participate in and/or develop their own research and quality improvement projects.
