Dr. Navkiran Shokar: Screening through ACCION saves lives - El Paso Times

Colorectal cancer, or cancer of the colon or rectum, is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Every year, about 140,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and more than 50,000 people die from it.

Based out of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center's Department of Family and Community Medicine, and the Cancer Center of Excellence, Project ACCION is a collaboration between the health sciences center and more than 20 academic and community-based organizations throughout El Paso County, including La Fe, Project Vida, El Paso Baptist Clinic, University Medical Center of El Paso hospital and clinics, the Housing Authority, the public health department, faith-based organizations and the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation.
