After Lubbock’s first case of West Nile virus was confirmed Thursday, experts are warning area residents to take precaution, but not to panic.

Ronald Warner, associate professor in the department of family and community medicine at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, said across the country, there have been more reported cases this year than any year since 1999, when the virus was first recognized. About 75 percent of those human cases have been reported from five states. About half those cases are in Texas.
