Understanding how a cell changes could lead to a better understanding of birth defects, according to a local researcher studying cell changes in fruit flies.

Jeffrey Thomas, assistant professor in the department of cell biology and biochemistry at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, said he chose to study the cells in fruit flies because their genetic makeup is scientifically understood.
