School Nurse Workshop to Discuss Childhood Obesity

WHAT: Continuing Nursing Education 20th Annual School Nurse Workshop, “Optimizing School Based Care of Overweight and Obese Children,” hosted by the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center’s (TTUHSC) Continuing Nursing Education Program.

WHEN: 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday (July 29)

WHERE: Region 17 Education Service Center, 1111 West Loop 289

EVENT: Obesity and being overweight are chronic illnesses affecting almost one-third of teens and children in the U.S. This workshop will increase nurses’ competence in assessing, preventing and managing childhood obesity and minimizing the burden of physical and emotional suffering associated with the disease.

Emily Merrill, Ph.D., R.N., professor and department chair of Nurse Practitioner Studies, and Mary Madeline Rogge, Ph.D., R.N., associate professor in the TTUHSC Anita Thigpen Perry School of Nursing, will serve as presenters.

Merrill has presented nationally on the subject of weight bias in health care. Rogge has presented nationally on the pathophysiology of obesity and weight loss. Both have extensive experience working with families and individuals suffering from obesity and related conditions such as Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Registration is $115 by July 14 and $140 thereafter. Attendees may receive a 10 percent discount when enrolling four or more nurses from one school or agency. Those who attend the program will receive seven contact hours. For more information call 743-2734.
