The Story of the Free Clinic

WHAT: The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) medical student leadership team for the TTUHSC Free Clinic at Lubbock Impact will present, “The Story of the Free Clinic.” The new 2014-2015 leadership team for the TTUHSC Free Clinic also will be presented.

WHEN: Noon to 1 p.m. Friday (April 11)

WHERE: TTUHSC Academic Classroom Building, 3601 Fourth St. Room 150

EVENT: Three medical students who recognized a need for health care for the uninsured and homeless in Lubbock established the clinic in 2008. The Lubbock community had a population of 230,000 and 40,387 (18 percent) of those residents were uninsured, yet there was no free primary care free clinic in the area.

The TTUHSC Free Clinic at Lubbock Impact officially opened on August 5, 2009, with 16 patients seen on the first night. Physician and student volunteers staffed the clinic in this first month and had 54 patient visits, seeing an average of 14 patients per night.

Three years after opening, the clinic averages more than 30 patients per night and has had more than 4,000 total patient visits and 250 medical student volunteers.

The new 2014-2015 leadership team for the TTUHSC Free Clinic also will be presented.
