Students to Participate in Trauma Simulation

WHAT: About 100 pharmacy, nursing, physician’s assistant, respiratory therapy and firefighter-paramedic students will participate in a trauma simulation at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) School of Nursing at Abilene to practice responding to various life-threatening medical situations.

WHEN: 7 a.m. to noon

Noon to 5 p.m.

WHERE: TTUHSC Simulation Center, 1674 Pine St.

EVENT: The purpose of the interactive trauma day is to promote the Institute of Medicine’s call for interprofessional collaboration and practice in health care.

Faculty with the schools of nursing and pharmacy, led by Ruth Bargainer, MSN, R.N., CNE, assistant professor and regional program director in the School of Nursing at Abilene, will conduct a study called, “Interprofessional Trauma Simulation: A Bridge to Quality Care,” to determine how the interactive trauma simulation promotes interprofessionalism.

The simulation center will be transformed into a tertiary trauma center, with red, yellow and green zones featuring simulated patients of varying acuities, including heart attack, stroke, asthma, snake bites and pregnancy complications. Students from all disciplines will work together to ensure positive patient outcomes.
