A telemedicine research project designed to give rural patients better access to care after hospital visits became a lifesaver for one Alpine family more than 20 years ago.

Big Bend Regional Medical Center had yet to host its first patient after being equipped in the early 1990s with telecommunications technology that linked to the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock.
