TTUHSC Physician Assistant Program 20th Anniversary
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) hosted a reception for the 20th Anniversary of the School of Health Professions Master of Physician Assistant Studies Program Nov. 6.
School of Health Professions Regional Dean Christina Robohm-Leavitt, said everyone was excited to look back and reflect over the past 20 years of the TTUHSC PA Program.
“With over 800 graduates, we celebrated the significant contributions of those PAs to help alleviate the shortage of health care providers and provide high quality patient care in West Texas and beyond,” Robohm-Leavitt said,
With a focus on primary care and family medicine, the TTUHSC PA program awards a Master of Physician Assistant Studies degree following 27 months of intensive academic and clinical training. Of the 27 months, the 15-month academic phase is conducted in Midland in a dedicated, first-class facility. The 12-month clinical experience is conducted at a variety of sites throughout West Texas.
PAs are highly qualified health professionals who are educated as medical providers. PAs are certified and licensed to practice medicine as part of the health care team. A PA exercises considerable autonomy in medical decision making, but the supervising physician and state law determine the scope of the PA’s practice. PAs deliver health care to diverse patients of all ages and a variety of medical settings.
The anniversary celebration featured remarks from Texas Tech University System Chancellor Tedd L. Mitchell, M.D., State Rep. Tom Craddick, School of Health Professions Regional Dean Christina Robohm-Leavitt and Jubel Reed, PA-C who is a member of the first graduating class of the TTUHSC PA Program.
