Biotechnology M.S.

Biotechnology combines science and innovation to address modern challenges in health, industry, and beyond. With an emphasis on entrepreneurial science, our program equips students for a variety of exciting career paths, including technical research positions in academia, government, or industry, biotech company leadership roles, patent law through preparation for the patent bar exam and advanced study through Ph.D. programs with a competitive edge.

Program Overview

The Biotechnology M.S. program offers two tailored tracks designed to match your career goals and educational interests. Read more information about the tracks below.

1-Year Non-Thesis Track: 30 didactic SCH + 6 SCH unpaid summer research or external internship.

21-Month Research Track: Add missing Year 2 schedule (Fall & Spring research and project reports). Clarify that on June 1 (Term 3), students transition into a paid Research Assistantship or industry internship through graduation the following Spring.

One-Year Non-Thesis Track

Build a strong foundation in core biotechnology concepts through comprehensive coursework and limited lab research—perfect for students seeking a faster path to versatile career opportunities.

30 credit hours completed across 3 semesters.

6 credit hours of unpaid summer research or internship opportunities in TTUHSC labs or external industry settings.

Program costs are estimated at $8500 for Texas residents and $22,000 for non-residents.

Ph.D. student

21-Month Research Track

Gain advanced expertise with two semesters of coursework followed by 12 months of full-time laboratory research, preparing you for impactful careers in academia, industry, or beyond.

Up to 51 credit hours completed across 5 semesters.

20 credit hours of research or internship.

Program costs are estimated between $11,000 and $13,200, depending on elective choices and salary determination.

  • Beginning June 1 of their third semester, Biotechnology students transition into a paid research position. Students can choose between:

    • A research assistantship in a TTUHSC faculty member’s lab.
    • An external internship in the biotechnology industry or related fields.

    These paid opportunities provide valuable hands-on experience and continue until the student graduates the following spring semester. Please note that while students receive compensation during this period, standard tuition and fees are still required.

We require official transcripts from all U.S. institutions attended, including those institutions for which you received transfer credit toward your undergraduate degree.

Electronic official transcripts from U.S. institutions are preferred and should be sent to: graduate.school@ttuhsc.edu.

  • A B.S. or B.A. degree in a natural science discipline.
  • Completed at least one semester each of:

    Is internship or research experience built into the program?

    Yes - the 1-year track includes a 6 credit summer research project or internship, and the 21-month track provides a full year of lab research or an industry internship.
