Geriatrics

Geriatric fellow responsibilities include participation in a university setting with clinical and academic programs to train medical students, residents and allied health professionals. Full range of clinical activities are available in addition to long-term care, including hospital consultation, outpatient/ambulatory care, assisted living settings, hospice and home care.

Hospice and Palliative Medicine

Hospice and Palliative fellows are exposed to and work within teams that have built practices of excellence in these areas and are consistent with Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care.

Sports Medicine

Sports Medicine has a 1-year fellowship program in Sports Medicine. Fellows see patients in Family Medicine sports medicine clinics, Texas Tech University Student Wellness sports medicine clinics, academic orthopedic surgery clinics, and private orthopedic clinics.

Texas Tech Physicians Medical Pavilion-Family Medicine Clinic

The Texas Tech Physicians Family Medicine Clinic serves as the primary
continuity site for the residency program. Within this setting, residents and
faculty provide comprehensive care to patients across all ages, life stages, and
socioeconomic backgrounds. The clinic supports the full scope of family
medicine, including pediatric well-child care, preventive health services for
adults, obstetrical and prenatal care, chronic disease management, office-based
procedures, geriatrics, sports medicine and so much more. This breadth of
clinical exposure ensures residents develop the knowledge, skills, and experience
necessary to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care in diverse practice
environments.

University Medical Center

University Medical Center (UMC) is a 500-bed hospital. It is a public, non-
profit facility that serves as the primary teaching hospital for the Texas Tech
University Health Sciences Center. UMC also includes a children's hospital
with Level IV NICU, a family-centered birth center, a regional burn center,
and the region's only Level 1 Trauma Center. While at UMC, TTUHSC Family
Medicine residents take care of hospitalized adults & children, work in the
critical care units, and provide family-centered maternity care in labor &
delivery.

Covenant Medical Center

Covenant Medical Center is a private, 452-bed hospital providing
comprehensive adult medical and surgical services. It is part of the larger
Covenant Health System which provides care to multiple areas in West Texas
and Eastern New Mexico. TTUHSC Family Medicine residents practice adult
inpatient medicine here, taking every 4th night unassigned call, off-setting a
hospitalist group.

Covenant Children's Hospital

Covenant Children’s Hospital, a part of the Covenant Health System, is an
184-bed facility. It is the region's only licensed freestanding children's
hospital, with a Level IV NICU and Level 2 Trauma designation. TTUHSC
Family Medicine residents see patients here during their Pediatric ER
rotation.

Grand Expectations

Grand Expectations is a UMC Health System clinic that offers free pregnancy
testing, and support for expecting mothers. TTUHSC Family Medicine
provides full-spectrum maternal and child healthcare to those who utilize
this facility.

Larry Combest Community Health & Wellness Clinic – Combest Central

Larry Combest Community Health & Wellness Center – Combest Central - is a
Federally Qualified Health Center serving Lubbock and surrounding areas.
The Combest Central clinic site was added in November 2024; here TTUHSC
Family Medicine works alongside advanced practice nursing providers to
provide primary care and management of chronic diseases for the whole
family.

Are you ACGME accredited?
Yes! The TTUHSC Family Medicine Residency Program at Lubbock has been fully-accredited through ACGME since 1973.

Do you accept International Medical Graduates?
We do! We have graduates from numerous countries and enjoy the diversity that our international graduates bring to our program. We only provide J-1 visa sponsorship and prefer that your medical school graduation date is in the past 5 years.

What do you think about couples or couples-matching?
As family physicians, we like people AND their families! We are familiar with having residents who have a significant other both in our program or in a different GME program within our institution. We know couples-matching can be exceptionally stressful and will do our best to coordinate interview experiences if we can.

Is this program DO-friendly?
Yes! We have trained many DO graduates and encourage them to utilize their OMT skill-sets to better care for our patient population.

Do you allow moonlighting opportunities?
Yes, but moonlighting is a privilege. Second- and third-year residents who are in good academic standing may apply to moonlight. There are many opportunities locally and within our region.

Who “fits” at TTUHSC Family Medicine Residency Program in Lubbock?
You! We are looking for applicants who are hard-working and want to be a well-trained family physician. We offer full-spectrum family medicine training but recognize not everyone wants to do everything in their future career; that’s the beauty of family medicine. We strive to place graduates into rural and underserved communities to help serve those communities who need health-care access the most. So, if you are curious and want to expand your medical knowledge and skills, work hard, but enjoy the people you work with and have some fun while completing your training then check us out!

Is this program family-friendly?
Of course! As family physicians, we think families are the most important part of what we do. We recognize residency can be very stressful and work to ensure our residents have balance between the ACGME requirements and their family needs as best we can. We have residents who have families at the start of the program and many who choose to grow their families during their 3 years of training here.

Will I be prepared for my future practice at graduation?
Yes! We have graduates who go into all areas of family medicine across the nation. The feedback we consistently receive from our graduates is that they all felt well prepared for their future practices.

What fellowships are available?
If you are thinking of wanting to have more of a focus in your future career, we offer amazing fellowships in Sports Medicine, Geriatrics, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Welcome! The TTUHSC-FMRP at Lubbock provides a unique setting for exceptional, full-spectrum, family medicine training that blends the academics of a university-based program and the autonomy felt in community-based programs. We are a 13-13-13 program which emphasizes preparation for practicing rural medicine with the opportunity to train in obstetrics, including surgical, during the three years of training. Lubbock’s location brings a unique and diverse patient population for learning, allowing our residents to excel in both hospital and outpatient medicine.  We practice inpatient medicine at our main academic hospital, University Medical Center, and at Covenant Medical Center a local community-based hospital.

Our primary Family Medicine Center is located at the TTUHSC Medical Pavilion and we have two community-based clinic locations at Grand Expectations and Larry Combest Community Health & Wellness Center Central. If you have never been out to West Texas, you may not know that Lubbock has a thriving arts & music community in addition to nearby beautiful outdoor locations for hiking, kayaking, or just watching the amazing sunsets. Lubbock is truly a city with amazing people, expansive food choices, and more.
