    Transfer Credit

    Courses provided from other institutions with equivalent course content are acceptable for transfer credit if a "C" or better was earned. Note: pass/fail courses are not acceptable for transfer. Maximum credits allowed for CLEP or correspondence courses are 15 each.

    If any of the pre-requisites have been or will be CLEP you will not receive credit towards the GPA we calculate. CLEP credit must be on an official college transcript for us to accept it.

Clinical Immersion

Course Name: Integrated Learning IV: Clinical Immersion (NURS 4610)

This course is designed to focus on subjects of special interest to groups of students. This course provides a clinical immersion experience for the student preparing to transition to practice in the clinical specialty area of the student's choice. Opportunity for integration of knowledge, concepts and skills from all four levels of curriculum will occur.

I love teaching at this level and in this course. I get to see students working in the areas of their choice, where their passion and excitement for the future are truly taking shape. Complex Concepts of Nursing Care

Course Name: Complex Concepts II with Application to Practice (NURS 4602)

This course provides opportunities for students to synthesize generalist nursing roles of provider and manager of care in the clinical and simulated acute care setting. Clinical judgment, reasoning and therapeutic nursing skills necessary in the acute care delivery are demonstrated in the application of evidence-based nursing care through simulated case studies and weekly clinical experiences. Simulated case studies and weekly clinical experiences will provide the opportunity for students to demonstrate nursing skills appropriate for the care of the patient experiencing acute care needs.

Pre-requisites: NURS3605, NURS3409, NURS3502, NURS3450, and NURS3606 

Co-requisites: NURS4407, NURS4204, and NURS4102.

The Acute Care course is designed to refine students’ assessment skills and strengthen their critical-thinking abilities. One of my favorite parts of teaching this course is watching students experience those “A-ha” moments as they expand their knowledge and sharpen their nursing practice. Through classroom activities, simulations, and case studies, we challenge students to think critically and apply concepts in meaningful ways. From the first day of the semester to the last, it is truly rewarding to witness their growth and increased confidence in their nursing abilities.

Health Promotion

Course Name: Health Promotion Across the Lifespan (NURS 3409)

An introduction to concepts of health promotion and maintenance across the lifespan with a focus on maintenance of functional capacity, physiologic changes, and access to health care.  Emphasis will be placed on improving quality of life through routine health assessment, advocacy, and education for health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention across the lifespan.

Mental & Behavioral

Course Name: Mental and Behavioral Health Nursing (NURS 3502)

This course emphasizes the concepts of altered mental health and the pathological processes associated with mental health disorders. The focus is on approaches to promote mental health/optimal function in the care of patients, groups, and families experiencing altered states of mental health utilizing evidence-based standards of care. The clinical portion provides opportunities for students to plan and provide holistic care for patients in mental health settings using evidence-based knowledge.

Minimum Admission Criteria

To get started on your Traditional BSN, you’ll need the following:

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is preferred.
  • Minimum science GPA of 3.0 is preferred.
  • At time of application deadline, applicants must have completed and/or have enrollment verification to support completion of the required non-nursing courses. A minimum of 14 of the required 19 non-nursing prerequisite courses must be completed by the deadline, including completion of at least 4 of the 5 required sciences.
  • Required sciences include: Chemistry with Lab (4 credit hours), Human Anatomy and Physiology I with Lab (4 credit hours), Human Anatomy and Physiology II with Lab (4 credit hours), Microbiology with Lab (4 credit hours), and Pathophysiology (3 credit hours).
  • Pathophysiology must be one of the four completed sciences at application deadline.
  • All copies of immunization records, lab reports, and/or health records must be provided prior to the start of the program. Students will not be allowed to register in courses until all records are received and approved by the Office of Institutional Health. The successful completion of the clinical component of your program is essential for graduation. As a result, students will not be able to complete program requirements for graduation without completing the clinical requirement.
  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older by the application deadline in order to be eligible for admission to the nursing program.

Additional Criteria

  • Proof of enrollment in any missing Texas Core or non-nursing prerequisite course must be supplied at time of application.
    • If applicant has previously been enrolled in another RN nursing program (including within the TTUHSC system), a letter of academic good standing, signed the previous nursing program director, must be submitted at the time of application.
    • Effective Spring 2025: Accepted students must submit documentation of completion of a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) or Patient Care Technician (PCT) course, other healthcare certification or relevant healthcare work experience (such as Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Paramedic, Certified Medication Aide, Operating Room Technician, Emergency Department Technician, etc.) prior to the first day of class. Admission preference may be given to applicants with prior CNA or PCT work experience at the time of application.
    • Effective Spring 2025: The Traditional BSN program will accept a college-level three (3) semester credit hour Medical Terminology course in lieu of the Communications in Nursing prerequisite requirement. All other prerequisite course requirements remain the same.  Continuing education or non-credit Medical Terminology courses will not be approved.

Requirements if Offered Admission (Due Prior to the Start of the First Day of Class)

  • BLS for Healthcare Providers from American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Certification must remain active throughout enrollment in the nursing program.
  • BON Eligibility - Only those who receive a BON Blue Card or Outcomes Letter with No Stipulations will be allowed to matriculate into the program. Please review the Board of Nursing's Licensure Eligibility page to determine if you will be required to submit a Declaratory Order if offered admission.
  • Final official transcripts from all colleges and universities with grades of C or above in all Texas Core Curriculum and non-nursing prerequisite courses.
  • Completion of Virtual Orientation.
  • Photo ID and picture for ID badge must be submitted.
  • Documentation of completion of a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) or Patient Care Technician (PCT) course, other healthcare certification or relevant healthcare work experience (such as Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Paramedic, Certified Medication Aide, Operating Room Technician, Emergency Department Technician, etc.).

    Here you will find several guides and tools to help you in determining if you have satisfied the prerequisite requirements.

  • If you are turning in an affidavit for vaccination exemption, you must hand deliver or mail the original affidavit to Office of Institutional Health.  State law requires Student Health has the original in possession.  While TTUHSC accepts this affidavit for vaccination exemption, please be aware that clinical practice sites may not accept these affidavits for vaccination exemptions (medical exemptions are accepted) resulting in an inability to complete clinical rotations unless in compliance.  Students should be aware that this could delay or prevent clinical site placement and/or graduation.

    Please review the required immunizations for your program by going to the TTUHSC Office of Institutional Health’s page and clicking on “Student Pre-Matriculation Forms”.  Completed immunization forms and required documentation should be sent to Tina Martinez at tinsteph@ttuhsc.edu.  

    • Graduate Students, Traditional BSN Students (Abilene, Amarillo, Lubbock, and Odessa) and Accelerated BSN Students (Abilene, Amarillo, Austin, Lubbock, Odessa, and San Antonio) – Use the School of Nursing – Undergrad, ABSN, Graduate form.

International students with F1 and F2 status are not eligible to apply to an online program.

  • FOR ALL UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS (TRADITIONAL BSN, RN-BSN, AND ACCELERATED BSN)

    Do not send international transcripts to the School of Nursing. Transcripts from schools outside the United States must be evaluated by a Foreign Credential Service. The school requires course-by-course evaluations and will accept evaluated transcripts and diploma information from the following services:

  • We only require a foreign transcript evaluation if the degree needed to enroll in the program is from outside the United States. For example, if you are applying to the MSN or BSN to DNP program and your BSN degree is from outside the United States or if you are applying to the Post-graduate Certificate or Post-Master’s DNP program and your MSN degree is from outside the United States.

    If you do need to submit a foreign transcript evaluation for any of the graduate programs, please note we require an official course-by-course evaluation from one of the following services:

  • Applicants that are not US Citizens and do not qualify for exceptions (see below) must submit one of the following as proof of English proficiency:

    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) www.toefl.org - The minimum TOEFL score required is 550 (paper-based version) or 79 (internet-based version). The TOEFL score must be received directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS); Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center’s institutional code is 6851. TOEFL scores are valid for only two years. 
    • International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) www.ielts.org - The minimum IELTS required score is an overall band score of 6.5 on the Academic version; IELTS General Training results are not acceptable. There is no IELTS institution code for Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. IELTS scores are valid for only two years. 
    • Duolingo English Test www.duolingo.com (Online examination) - The minimum requirement Duolingo score is 100.  Applicants for undergraduate programs should submit scores to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing Undergraduate Programs.  Applicants for graduate programs should submit scores to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing Graduate Programs.
    • PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic; PTE Academic) - The minimum required PTE Academic score is 60.  PTE General and PTE Young Learners results are not acceptable.  There no PTE Academic institution code for TTUHSC.  PTE Academic scores are valid for only two years.
    • Cambridge CPE (Cambridge Certificate of Proficient in English; CPE) - The minimum required Cambridge CPE grade is C.  There is no institutional code for the Cambridge CPE.  The Cambridge CPE is valid for life.
    • Cambridge CAE (Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English; CAE) - The minimum required Cambridge CAE grade is B.  There is no institutional code for the Cambridge CAE.  The Cambridge CAE is valid for life.

    English Proficiency Testing Waivers and Country Specific Exemptions:

    • Applicant attended four (4) consecutive long semesters (fall and spring terms) of credit-bearing/non-development/non- ESL courses at an accredited post-secondary school in the U.S.
    • Applicant attended two (2) consecutive years of high school in the United States.
    • Applicant attended two (2) consecutive years of high school with U.S. accreditation or within an English proficiency exempt country
    • Applicants from the below English proficiency exempt countries (must provide proof with passport):

    Upon acceptance to the School of Nursing, F-1 international students are required to submit original documents or copies that verify the details and scope of their academic program, as well as their citizenship, financial status, and visa information. To facilitate the issuance of the Form I-20, these documents must be provided to the Immigration Compliance office.
