The John Wayne Foundation Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, located in Lubbock, Texas is the flagship training institution within the Texas Tech University healthcare system. We provide care to patients over an expansive region of west Texas, eastern New Mexico, and Oklahoma. Our service area covers 1.8 million patients, primarily rural, who routinely travel several hours to seek care. Our primary partnering hospital, University Medical Center, is a 500-bed tertiary referral center, and the TLC2 Foundation Cancer Center is opening in the spring of 2026 which will serve as the headquarters for much of our multidisciplinary care.

Through our partnership with the John Wayne Foundation and the Rural Cancer Collaborative we have emphasized clinical expansion utilizing treatment modalities previously unavailable in West Texas. Highlights for our program include advanced robotic approaches to hepatobiliary and foregut surgery, histotripsy, and HIPEC.

Research

Our program offers 4 dedicated months which is intended to serve as a foundational period to establish longitudinal research efforts which will span the duration of the 2-year fellowship. We offer involvement in outcomes research utilizing in-house registries. Additionally, there are opportunities to participate in bench research with our translational research team.

Clinical Rotations and Didactics

After the research block, the fellow will gain exposure to multidisciplinary practice with dedicated rotations in medical oncology and radiation oncology. We also utilize this time to gain early exposure to endocrine, skin cancer, and breast surgery.  The remainder of the fellowship is spent on core rotations in HPB surgery, colorectal, general surgical oncology and follows a mini-mentorship model with dedicated rotations with our individual faculty. We follow the CGSO Score curriculum and will participate in SSO national videoconferences.

Meetings and Conferences

The program will send a fellow each year to the Fellow’s institute. We will also send fellows to the annual SSO meeting. While presentations are encouraged, they are not required for SSO attendance as we feel this is an important opportunity for networking with other surgical oncologists. Travel to additional meetings will be funded based on presentation status.

Eligibility

Fellowship applications are accepted through ERAS. Eligible applicants must be ABS board eligible and must have completed an ACGME accredited general surgery program.
