Program Overview
The MSCR curriculum places a strong emphasis on telehealth, a model of distance-based service provision and a cutting-edge technique growing in practice and acceptance in the health care field. All students in the MSCR are eligible for a certificate in telehealth upon graduation from the program.
The MSCR program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) as a clinical rehabilitation counseling program through 2029.
What Is Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling?
The Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification refers to clinical rehabilitation counseling as “bringing together all the pieces of the puzzle.”
Clinical Rehabilitation Counselors empower their clients to make informed choices, build viable careers, and live more independently within their communities. They provide and coordinate services for people with a wide range of physical and psychiatric disabilities, chronic conditions or diseases, and social disabilities. Clinical rehabilitation counselors also work with employers to increase their understanding of how disabilities fit into the workplace.
Accreditation
The MSCR Program is currently accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP) as a clinical rehabilitation counseling program through 2029. The program is applying for accreditation with CACREP as a clinical rehabilitation counseling program. The program was previously accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) from 2003-2017.

How to Apply
Online Application
Applicants for the MSCR program must complete the TTUHSC SHP application. Additional forms will be added to your checklist after you have submitted the online application. Required supporting documentation (if applicable) can be uploaded from your Student Status page.
Application Fee
A non-refundable $75 application fee is required and may be paid by credit card through the online application system.

Transcripts
By Mail: Transcripts must be in an official sealed envelope by the institution and sent to our mailing address:

Electronically: Submit official electronic transcripts from every college or university attended directly from the institution or an approved third-party transcript service to shp.application@ttuhsc.edu.
Please note:
Do not send transcripts to Texas Tech University, as TTUHSC is a separate institution and doing so will delay application processing.
Official TTUHSC transcripts are not required; official Texas Tech University transcripts are required.
Transcripts from international institutions must include an official course-by-course evaluation from a recognized Foreign Transcript Evaluation Service.
Applicants are responsible for ensuring all required application materials, including updated transcripts, are received by the application deadline.
Admissions Requirements
The Master of Science in Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling (MSCR) program begins twice a year, in the Fall and Spring. Please look through the admissions requirements, application and deadline information.
Criminal Background Check
All students must complete a criminal background check prior to entering the MSCR program.
Official GRE Scores
The GRE is not required for the MSCR Program.
Bachelor's Degree
Individuals applying for the Master of Science in Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling (MSCR) degree program must already hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in a related area such as psychology, sociology, rehabilitation, occupational therapy, social work, special education, or nursing; however, degrees in other areas will be considered.
Minimum GPA
Individuals applying for the Master of Science in Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling (MSCR) degree must meet the following Grade Point Average (GPA) requirements:
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher, or
- A minimum cumulative GPA in the last 60 semester hours of courses of 2.7 or higher
- Applicant's with lower GPA's may be considered based upon their work experience in a human services related field for three (3) or more years.
Resume
A current resume is required to be submitted through the online application system.
Letters of Recommendation
Two letters of recommendation are required for an application to be complete, but the program prefers three letters of recommendation be submitted. Letters of recommendation are submitted online through the SHP Application. A recommender's name and email address will be required. Your recommender will receive an email with a link to our recommendation form for them to submit electronically.
Essay
An essay is required as part of the application.

Prior work experience, paid or voluntary, in human service settings will normally be expected. Persons applying with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. Fulfillment of the basic requirements does not guarantee admission
The applications for admission to the MSCR program are reviewed and rank ordered according to:
- Academic performance
- Career goals
- Previous work or volunteer experience to the field
- Unique individual contributions to the field
- Writing skills
- Computer literacy
The faculty admissions committee selects the top applicants and rank orders them according to the selection criteria. Selected applicants are contacted for a telephone interview. Recommendations for admission are made to the Dean of the School of Health Professions.

Rehabilitation Counselor Certification
On completion of the MSCR program, you will possess the competencies and experiences necessary to take the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor Examination (CRCE) and the National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE) to qualify as a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) and be able to apply for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in most states. Licensure requirements vary by state; you can find specific state information on the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) website.

As with many health care professions, clinical rehabilitation counselors work with clients in a variety of settings, including schools and universities, state workforce systems, veteran’s services, advocacy and non-profit agencies, employee assistance programs, private forensic practice, community rehabilitation centers, and hospital settings.
- According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, increases in an aging population and continuing demands by impacted groups such as veterans and the disabled, translate into strong demand for the services provided by clinical rehabilitation counselors.
- The BLS projects a 13% job growth in the field through 2026, faster than average for all occupations.
- According to the BLS, most employers require a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling.
Job Outlook
The American Counseling Association (ACA) recently conducted a comprehensive survey looking at counselor compensation and benefits across the profession. Survey results indicated that Clinical Rehabilitation Counselors were named the highest paid specialty in the counseling profession and additionally earned better overall benefits.
According to the ACA study, Clinical Rehabilitation Counselors:
- are the most highly paid counseling specialty on average
- earn more than Clinical Mental Health Counselors, Mental Health Counselors, or Community Counselors on average
- receive better overall benefits - employee retirement plan, medical coverage, dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability - than other professional counselors
